Exhibition Record

2018  -  recent years have seen significant growth in work being purchased directly from my studio or after viewing on-line on the website. Galleries continue to  have an important role to play but the move towards studio and on-line exhibitions allows me to have direct contact with purchasers. Also, living and working in the Hebrides, whilst in my view adding to the integrity of my work, inevitably creates logistical challenges shipping work around to and from galleries.

I will have work in the specialist Scottish Exhibition at Iona House Gallery in Woodstock in October 2018 and I have a small selection of work in Greens and Blues Fine Art, North Berwick. I also have a programme of themed studio exhibitions throughout the year.

Education and Development

“Education is what remains when you have forgotten everything you were taught” (A. C. Benson)
I studied art to A level after which I studied anatomical and life drawing/painting with Robert Callender under the direction of David Michie in an intercalated study course at Edinburgh College of Art during my time at Edinburgh University.  Prior to 2008, I worked in the charitable sector, in many parts of the developing world. I have always painted and since 2007 I have made painting my full-time profession. Ultimately, all artists have to develop their own style through practice and hard work but I cannot overstate the value of guidance and practical support from professional "critical friends" along the way.

In 2008 ITV 1 made a programme about my work for  "Tales from the Country".  I have painted with two "plein air" groups, Buxton Artists and the Wapping Group.

I am an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
